![]() ![]() Had Kingfisher been content to keep it a smaller story like in Minor Mage, it would have worked better for me. The second challenge-perhaps like much in baking-was one of scale. I might have liked her better if I was ten. But not my favorite kind of lead character. And I kind of applaud Kingfisher for trying to tell a story about someone who doesn't want to be a hero, and who doesn't get powered-up and stomp all over the story. Her emotional breakdowns are in line with this persona, as are her worries. She's a young, rule-follower, trusting sort of young person, and that's fine. While that is entirely alright, the mileage one gets out of this may vary. While she does grow into her magic, I would hesitate to say she grows significantly into her personhood power. There were two problems here, both of which will vary tremendously depending on the reader. I’m pretty sure that’s a scientific fact." But what at first seems to be a murder mystery when a young baker named Mona finds a body in the bakery morphs fairly quickly into a coming-of-age story, in the setting of a politically unstable landscape. ![]() ![]() ![]() Griffin discovers that the recently deceased Luna has become a member of the colony and has no memory of him. ![]() The bats are wary of Griffin because, as he is still alive, he appears to glow to them. In a repugnant, post-apocalyptic america, this had the potential to be another YA dystopian novel that would fade into the back behind books like the Hunger Games, The Giver and Divergent, But no more than 10 pages in I knew I was hooked. I didn't read any reviews about them and I didn't know that there would be such a lack of romance. This was the first Schwab book I'd ever picked up. There aren't many YA books that don't have a central focus on romance these days, though it does have a hint or taste here and there, really, it was almost refreshing for romance to play such a small role. ![]() I absolutely devoured these two books in about two or three days. Steinbeck was a better novelist, a better pet owner, and a nicer man. Lots of people seem to like Hemingway, and I expect they have their reasons, but I refuse to entertain them. Like I said, this is based on nothing other than a hunch. My current favourite is this: just as you are either a cat person or a dog person, United or City, Italian or French food: you are either a Hemingway person or a Steinbeck person. It must be a hangover of studying English at university and being forced to provide evidence for all my reckless assertions - now I treat myself to the occasional assertion, the more reckless the better. And also, how his words were received in San Simeon, Hearst’s famous Californian castle. Mankiewicz, holed up in a desert ranch with a collection of broken bones, wrote that incendiary movie script. That’s a moment captured in David Fincher’s fascinating new film Mank, which dramatises the process by which Herman J. Charles Foster Kane was modelled, blatantly and pointedly, on Hearst himself, and within its fiction, Citizen Kane contained some painful, and subversive truths. Can a fictional film damage a real person’s reputation? William Randolph Hearst certainly thought so, as he mobilised to stop the screenplay of Citizen Kane being turned into a movie. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() While he is able to sell most of them, the time lag between the sales and his growing financial demands enrage his wife, Linda, who works as a hotel maid.
